Learn to master your thinking to improve your writing

Photo by Priscilla Du Preez on Unsplash

Sometimes when we write we really can be our very own worst critic. This may stop us from pushing the publish button, decrease our motivation, and even increase the risk of us giving up on our dreams. So, what are these unhelpful thinking habits holding us back and what can we do about them in order to improve our writing?

1. Letting go of perfectionism

Writing high-quality, well-researched pieces is important, but at some stage, we do just need to go for. I get it I used to be perfectionistic and ended up burning out. Don’t be afraid to hit publish on a post that…

My aim was to gain 500 followers and establish better writing habits!

Inspired by David Majister I made a pledge in May 2021 to take part in the Medium 30-Day Writing Challenge. During this challenge, I planned to write 30 posts in 30 days and submit to 30 different publications!

My personal aim:

  • Grow my followers — my goal was to reach 500 followers within 30 days. At the time of writing this post I had 324.
  • Network and connect with other writers — I wanted to learn from some of the best writers on Medium and be part of an engaging and supportive community.
  • Increase consistency of my writing — To improve my writing…

Want to learn something new you then make the time for it!

Let me ask you this if you only brush your teeth once a week for 45 minutes as you are too busy to do it every day would it be beneficial? NO WAY and I don’t recommend it either. Unless you want to have a pretty stinky breath or lose all your teeth! So, now apply this to language learning if you only study 45 minutes on a Sunday evening is this beneficial to you?

The answer is NO. 10–20 minutes of study per day followed by a weekly review is far better than just 45 minutes once a week…

But should we really be afraid?

Trigger warning: This article is about spiders! Arachnophobia is one of the most common phobias in the world, but if this is something you are currently struggling with please don’t read any further and seek professional support.

Hello fellow arachnophobes 🕷️

It’s that time of the year that turns terrifying… no not Halloween, but September. The official UK season of the spider. In the next few weeks, hundreds of horny spiders in YOUR household are going to want to mate to produce well more spiders! YAY!

Here’s a fun fact from Best Insect House:

There are about 40,000 types of…

📈Your friendly guide to growth…

Community matters and it should be at the heart of everything you do, but more and more sites are now introducing criteria that you need to meet to start earning. This is usually based on followers and engagement.

The way I see it 30 engaged followers are much better than 100s or even 1000s of unengaged fake followers. Although Medium now has an automated system in place to ‘take out the trash’, thank you.

With the changes, I want to show you how you can build your following in a meaningful way. I appreciate every one of my followers and…

Learn to embrace the space

Photo by Steven Ungermann on Unsplash

Now I don’t know about you, but in general, I don’t understand us, humans. On one hand, we seem to crave space, but on the other hand, we have this insatiable urge to fill space with ‘stuff’.

The question is why? Why do we have such an urge to fill our spaces? It doesn’t just seem to be an individual thing either. As groups, we like to fill spaces too.

Take my local council, for example. We need more roads to ease congestion so the farmer sold off some land and they are building a new road. …

How to cope when a publication says no!

Photo by Gemma Evans on Unsplash

Most of our so-called writing failures are nothing more than a rejection. Knowing how to deal with and even use rejection as a stepping stone to greatness will help lessen your pain and drive you towards success.

Fear of failure is the number one cause of doing nothingness! Seriously, If you never fail how can you achieve anything? We learn from our mistakes. However, humans have a built-in need for acceptance. When we face rejection it can cut right through us causing physical hurt.

Our success in writing is merely a form of acceptance and that’s why it feels so…

RE-ENTRY

Welcome back to the world…

In about 25 to 30 years’ time, I will be telling my grandchildren about the time the world closed. As scary as it was it brought about great change, the dawn of a new era. As the world closed nature had some time to restore itself.

Strangely during the time, I was allowed outside to ‘exercise’ — I don’t run, but it was a good excuse to escape the house. I noticed something rather beautiful. The trees seemed a little greener and the waters looked almost tropical. …
